We have a new book from a local author and film producer, Belsoc member, Gordon Lewis. ‘The Man Who Refused to Look Away’ is a follow up to his Sunday Times bestseller, ‘Secret Child’.
When Irish society and the Catholic Church turned their backs on unmarried mothers, homeless men, women leaving prostitution, and homosexual men, Frank Duff stepped in. Often seen as eccentric, he founded three revolutionary hostels:
- Sancta Maria for women leaving prostitution
- Morning Star for homeless men
- Regina Coeli for unmarried mothers and their children
“Despite resistance from powerful archbishops, Duff stood firm, believing what the Church ignored: the sacred bond between mother and child must never be broken. I know, because I lived in Regina Coeli hostel”, says Gordon Lewis.
