Congratulations to The Winch for winning the Locality Community Heritage Award in the Locality Awards (www.locality.org.uk)!
Supported by Historic England, this award celebrates community organisations that have used a locally listed or nationally designated heritage asset to improve the lives of their community.
Originally built in 1937 the library was threatened with closure in 2012. The Winch took a vital step in rescuing the library, opening it as a community hub and maintaining its historical and cultural significance at the heart of the community. Friends of Belsize Library, initially founded to save the library, support it and run a monthly lecture series.
The library hosts baby groups, story-times, weekly ‘Crafternoon’, open mic, music nights, various community groups and other activities attracting 10,000 people a year to read, learn and connect.
