Retrofit

What is ‘Retrofit’?

Retrofitting, in general, refers to to the process of upgrading or adapting an existing structure, system or technology to improve its performance, efficiency or functionality. In the context of buildings, it involves making energy-efficient improvements to existing structures, such as adding insulation, upgrading windows and doors, and installing renewable energy systems.

Where do you start? What returns the best ‘bangs for bucks’. How long will it take to pay off the costs?

It is easy to get seduced by the latest sales pitch and choose expensive kit where some cheap DIY might make a more cost-effective option. It might be inadvisable buying an expensive heat pump, for instance, if your house is draughty and poorly insulated.

Camden’s website has an excellent area of advice on all the different methods of reducing your home’s energy usage right up to a full ‘retrofit’.

‘Which’ also provide a free calculator for assessing what might work in your home.

Retrofit Kentish Town (RKT) is our local partnership of organisations and interested parties to discuss and plan for retrofit in the Kentish Town and surrounding areas in London Borough of Camden (post codes NW1, NW3, NW5, N6 and N19). The aim is to encourage, educate and enable people to start retrofit projects on their homes and businesses.

They hold regular meetings so check out their website for their events.

Retrofit Kentish Town Ltd is a community benefit co-operative registered number 9389 at the Financial Conduct Authority. You can join as a member here (just £5!)

BelSoc is represented at RKT by Chris Langdon who sits on their Committee.
